Into the Teeth of the Wind

There are presently no open calls for submissions.

The submission portal for the 2016 edition is closed. The submission portal for the 2017 edition will open January of 2017.

Into the Teeth of the Wind is a student-run poetry journal sponsored by the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. We seek great poetry, particularly poems concerned with people, identity, and social justice. Does your poem take a formal or poetic risk? We’d love to read it.

Submission Guidelines

Into the Teeth of the Wind publishes one issue per year, in the first week of June. While we accept both poetry and art submissions year-round, our reading period is from the first week of January through the second week of April.

We accept unsolicited manuscripts of previously unpublished poetry, up to five poems at a time. Submissions must include a short bio as well as your mailing address. While we accept simultaneous submissions, please notify us immediately if work has been published elsewhere.

We also accept art submissions, up to eight pieces per artist. Submissions must include a short bio as well as your mailing address. We want large pieces that could take up an entire page or small pieces that could accompany a poem.

We do not accept multiple submissions from a poet or artist within the same reading period.

We will be sure to notify you of the status of your submission by the end of May. If you have questions about your submission, feel free to email winds.teeth@ccs.ucsb.edu.

Contributors will receive a free copy of the issue in which their work appears. Into the Teeth of the Wind receives first North American publishing rights only (and the right to publish selected artwork and poetry on this website); all work remains copyrighted by its respective creators.

Séance

Into the Teeth of the Wind, along with SPECTRUM Literary Magazine, sponsors a weekly literary open mic night in the College of Creative Studies. Once a month we have a featured musical act. We are now accepting submissions for this act. Selected artists will play a twenty-minute set and receive a free copy of the forthcoming edition of Teeth, in which they will be thanked in the acknowledgements. We are open to all genres of music, but our venue has limited amplification potential.
